Lady the 5week old puppy that fell down a drain pipe on Sunday morning survives after being stuck in the pipe for more than 30 hours.

For more than 30 hours this little puppy had us digging, calling, hoping, and praying. The little 5 week old pup fell down a 110mm drain pipe on Sunday morning. A cry for help was put out by members of the Silverton community. Several people responded to the call. We started digging a hole to get to the drain pipe, and hopefully the puppy. After nearly 6 hours of enduring the heat, and making turn to dig, we had only got to a depth of about 1.5m

Nearly giving up hope, people on our community WhatsApp group came to our aid again. This time sending out people to give hope, advice, and a new determination to dig some more and the fire brigade. At about 23H00 the digging was stopped, due to everybody being overly tired, and some needing sleep as Monday it was back to work for them, the others made turns to sit at the hole and speak to the puppy, making sure the puppy didn’t give up hope, and knew we coming for her.

On Monday morning the digging continued. Some people sent their gardeners to help dig. Somebody even sent out a TLB to come and dig. Now having the hole at over 2m deep, and about 5m long, and 2m wide, we could have a scope at what would be our next move at getting the puppy out. We decided to put food out for the pup, in an effort to lure the pup out. Having done so, we waited. Occasionally we called the pup.

At about 18H45 Monday afternoon the little pup came crawling out of the pipe after the food. The pup was fed, given water and rushed to the vet to be sure she will survive after being stuck down there for 30 plus hours.

We would like to thank everybody that was part of this big ordeal. The people that sent out help in the form of a TLB and the plumbers that will be fixing all the pipe work that got damaged during the digging. We would also like to thank all the people that sent out their gardeners that came to help. And a big thank you to the people from Tshwane Fire Department, for their assistance.
Without all of the team work and effort that was put in, little “Lady” would not have been here now.

This little puppy has two siblings. These three little puppies were rescued from a house where they were left for dead. So this is a truly lucky little “Lady”. A true fighter.
